The original Moertjiesklip Padstal is a classic Cape longhouse, believed to date back to the late 19th century. Measuring approximately 16m x 6.6m, this historic building once formed part of the early settlement and at one stage served as a local school, later becoming a rural dwelling.

Set within a quiet farm landscape, the structure reflects traditional Cape building craftsmanship, with thick stone walls built from local rubble, finished in clay mortar and lime wash. Although time has weathered parts of the building, its authentic character and strong sense of place remain intact.

Originally thatched and later adapted with a corrugated iron roof, the building has evolved over time with a rear lean-to addition that expanded its use and functionality. Its layout and scale offer strong potential for sensitive restoration and adaptive reuse.

Today, Moertjiesklip Padstal continues to serve as a welcoming stop for travellers passing through the region. With a liquor licence in place, it offers a selection of local and homemade goods, providing an authentic taste of the farm and surrounding area. It remains a valued pause point on the journey—where visitors can slow down, refresh, and experience a genuine piece of rural Herold life.
